Keyless Vehicle Access for Shared Fleets: How It Works

Keyless vehicle access lets riders and staff use a vehicle without a physical key: they scan a QR code in an app, tap an NFC card, or the operator unlocks the vehicle remotely. A connected device on the vehicle carries out the command, so there are no keys to hand over, copy or lose. The main things to check are how access is given and taken away, whether every unlock is logged, and what happens when there is no mobile signal.

Keyless vehicle access lets people use a fleet vehicle without a physical key. A rider scans a QR code in an app or taps an NFC card on the vehicle, or a staff member unlocks it remotely from a console. A connected device on the vehicle receives the command and unlocks it. For shared fleets this is not an extra: without keyless access, sharing vehicles with the public would not work at all.

Why keyless access matters

Physical keys slow a fleet down and add risk. For every vehicle, someone has to hand keys over, collect them again, keep track of copies and replace the ones that go missing. Each step costs staff time, and every lost or copied key is a way for a vehicle to be taken.

Keyless access removes those steps:

  • No handovers. A rider can start a ride at any hour without meeting anyone.
  • No copies. Access is given and taken away in software, so there is no key to copy.
  • A record of access. You can see who opened which vehicle, and when.

There are several ways to unlock a vehicle without a key. Each suits different riders and places.

Scan to Ride

In the Axons Mobility rider app, your own branded app on iOS and Android, a rider scans the QR code on the vehicle to unlock it over the mobile network. If the QR sticker is scratched or missing, the rider types the vehicle code instead, so the ride still happens. Riders can also hold a vehicle for a few minutes while they walk to it.

NFC card tap-to-ride

The Axons Mobility connected device has an NFC reader built in. Operators enroll a card by tapping it, then choose whether it opens one vehicle or every vehicle. A tap can start a ride, end a ride or switch between the two. Every tap is listed with the reason it was allowed or refused, so a question like “why didn’t my card work?” has a clear answer, and you get an alert when a wrong or unknown card is tapped.

Remote lock, unlock and ignition

From the live map in the Axons Mobility operator console, staff can lock or unlock a vehicle, switch the ignition, force-stop a ride or follow a vehicle as it moves. Lock and unlock show as done only once the vehicle confirms, and you choose exactly who on your team can send vehicle commands.

Theft and tow alerts

A locked vehicle that starts moving raises a tow alert, and the device notices when a vehicle falls over. Your team sees the vehicle on the live map and can lock it or switch its ignition off from there.

Keyless access helps every kind of shared vehicle, in slightly different ways:

  • E-scooters and e-bikes. Riders unlock quickly, which matters when most trips are short.
  • Mopeds. Faster vehicles call for more checks before unlock, such as an ID check and a helmet photo.

How keyless unlock works, step by step

With the rider app

  1. The rider opens the app and finds a vehicle on the map, or walks up to one.
  2. They scan the QR code, or type the vehicle code if the sticker is damaged.
  3. The app checks the rider is ready to ride, for example that their ID and selfie check is done, plus any helmet photo or quick sobriety check the operator uses.
  4. The unlock travels over the mobile network to the device on the vehicle, and the ride starts once the vehicle confirms it is unlocked.
  5. At the end, the app shows whether the rider is in a parking zone and how far the nearest one is, before the rider ends the ride.

With an NFC card

  1. The rider taps their card on the reader on the vehicle.
  2. The card is checked against the vehicles it is allowed to open.
  3. If it is allowed, the ride starts. If not, the tap is refused and the reason is recorded.
  4. Depending on how the card is set up, a later tap ends the ride.

What to check before choosing a keyless access system

Keyless access is only as good as its security and how it behaves on a bad day. Ask any provider:
